Fourteen people were killed on Wednesday night when a minibus collided with a truck in Bolu.

The minibus was carrying passengers who had attended a funeral in the northern city of Samsun. The accident occurred on the Gerede-Karabük Highway after the driver of the minibus, who was reportedly speeding, lost control of the vehicle and collided with a semi-trailer that was heading for northwestern Karabük. The accident killed 14 people, including a young child, and injured another passenger.

Twelve of the passengers on the minibus were pronounced dead at the scene and another passenger and the driver of the truck died at the hospital. The injured passenger, Kahraman Armutçu, was rushed to Bolu Köroğlu State Hospital for medical attention. No information was available on his condition. The remains of the dead were sent to their hometowns for burial.

Murat Görgüç, an eye witness to the accident, stated that he lost 13 of his relatives in the crash. “We attended a funeral in the Bafra district of Samsun. My relatives preferred to take a minibus, and I decided to follow them in my own car. The minibus was only meters in front of me. I suddenly saw the minibus collide with a truck. It was a dreadful accident. All the passengers were trapped in the minibus,” he said. Sources said the bodies were placed on top of one another in one ambulance for transport to the morgue at Gerede State Hospital, which sparked harsh criticism among the public and religious scholars.

Former Religious Affairs Directorate head Mehmet Nuri Yılmaz said people, as valuable human beings, must be respected even after death. “They should have respected our dead citizens. Dead bodies may be carried altogether in cases of emergency or obligation. But in yesterday’s case, they should have, at the least, been carried in pairs,” he stated.
